Mathematical House for a Natural Philosopher
In the light of the Covid-19 pandemic, the International Institute of Cosmism (IIC) is developing a site in London’s historic centre and financial district, known as the City. The IIC approach involves travelling in two different directions at once, back to the seventeenth century, to look at the adventures in architecture and science that arose at the time of the Great Fire and on the other hand, to the future.
The project delivers a proposal for a mathematical house for my natural philosopher, an anatomist. Located at Ludgate Hill, on a podium, this house is designed with a double skin façade creating a natural ventilation system using azolla, a hydroponic plant, in the cavity to improve indoor air quality. On the other hand, the exterior sheath embodies the form of a Christopher Wren tower, relevant to the context of The City of London. In the development process, the interior spaces and structure concluded as a result of exploring anatomy in architecture, researching on the geometry of anatomy and observing anatomical systems in architecture, specifically spaces such as anatomical theatres.
