A Prototype in Beijing

This project takes prototypical ideas from the Somers Town project to be consolidated, expanded and tested in Beijing, where there is a distinct urban form made up of 16 districts offset around the Palace Museum in rings. The currently vacant site is situated between the Hutong courtyards and the utilitarian 5-6 story slab blocks.

Drawing inspirations from Chinese landscape paintings, the project creates an international student community that breaks the traditional Chinese norm of housing students in on-campus dormitory enclaves, and seeks to create an inhabited roofscape that reaches out to the local community, to create a more diverse neighbourhood. This proposed design which houses international exchange students with local Chinese students, 218 students in total, creates culturally rich courtyards where different activities take place.
